Leamington's top community pub celebrates Independence Day

  • The Newbold Comyn Arms salutes the USA with a day of Harley Davidsons, bourbon and rock’n’roll

Harley Davidsons, a shot of premium Bourbon and high energy rock’n’roll – these are the three perfect ingredients of American culture that a Leamington pub will be bringing together to celebrate Independence Day

CAMRA’s Community Pub of the Year, The Newbold Comyn Arms turns itself into the 51st state this Saturday July 4th when a posse of Harleys arrives for an afternoon of live blues music and an African style barbecue.

The bikes will be ridden by members of the Silverstone Harley-Davidson team from Towcester, Northants who are visiting Leamington Spa for the day. After roaring along The Parade and taking part in a show of Americana in the Regent Street shopping area, the team will be on hand at The NCA to show off three bikes from the extensive Harley-Davidson range:

  • Sportster: An entry-level bike with either an 883cc or 1200cc engine. Made by Harley Davidson for the last 53 years,; tough, no-nonsense, stripped down, ready-for-action street bikes.
  • Fat Boy: The iconic Harley Davidson bike. Clean, streamlined with cool retro looks, 1584cc v-twin engine. This particular bike is a limited edition, with customised leather and paintwork, one of only 200 worldwide.
  • Fat Bob: A pure, raw riders’ bike with exposed rear shocks and battery cover – reminiscent of the earliest days of factory custom motorcycles. Pure hardcore with a1584cc v-twin engine.

Harley-Davidson clothing will also be on sale.

The evening offers a chance to taste America’s national drink when The NCA hosts an exclusive Bourbon master-class, 7-9pm in the pub’s function room.

The very special private tasting of American whiskey and premium Bourbon is hosted by dynamic wine and whisky consultant, Matt Swift, Director of Matt on Malt Ltd.

Matt reveals the secrets of American whiskey distillation from the most famous of Tennessee sipping whiskey to the Ultra Premium Bourbons of Kentucky, Advance tickets for the unique and fascinating event are £25, which includes a barbecue platter.

To round off the day, full tilt rock ’n roll and ragtime boogie-woogie will be rocking The NCA’s Stables Bar, courtesy of highly acclaimed Black County band The Bo Dudleys.

Expect the free admission show to be loud and raucous but with surprisingly delicate touches of musicianship to ensure that harmonies and melodies are never lost in the mayhem of Rock ’n Roll. And if it wasn’t for their Dudley accents, you’d think you were in one of the hottest downtown boogie club across the Atlantic.

Says licensee of The NCA Nick Wormald, ‘This is going to be a day to remember. What better way is there for an independent trader like me to celebrate the spirit of independence on July 4th?’

The Harley team will arrive at 2:30pm and the evening’s music kicks off at 9pm. Further details are available from The NCA’s website: www.newboldcomynarms.co.uk.

Leamington’s top community pub celebrates music and dance from across the world
  • An international weekend of entertainment at The Newbold Comyn Arms promotes Warwickshire’s links with Sierra Leone

A celebration of music and dance from across the globe takes place in Leamington this weekend.

CAMRA’s Community Pub of the Year, The Newbold Comyn Arms plays host to a packed programme featuring Bhangra, Samba, Latin Jazz, Steel Pans, African dance music and songs from Eastern Europe to North America.

The weekend aims to spread the word about a longstanding link between the communities of Warwick District and Bo in Sierra Leone, organised and promoted by One World Link. The last 27 years have witnessed a number of cultural events, exchange visits, pen pal links and joint projects between the two communities including the recent construction of a community centre in Bo.

The fun starts on Friday night (19th June) with the popular Tellurian Dance Hall in The NCA’s main building. Here you can dance the night away to rhythms from across the world – from raucous Balkan beats to Senegalese hip hop and Brazilian funk, or groove to the reggae beats of Tallawah Sound in The Stables Bar. Tickets on the door at £3 per person (or £5 per couple) admit to both events.

On Saturday, June 20th from 9pm, The Stables Bar plays host to the summer sounds of The Steel Pan Academy – admission is by recommended donation of £2 at the door.

And from 12.30pm on Sunday June 21st, The NCA presents a spectacular Festival of World Music with a line-up of guests from around the globe.

Warwickshire’s 6-piece band Loco Mundo plays lively Latin jazz and world music from Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and the Caribbean. The day also features music and fun with The Bierkeller Shunklers, Samba Allstars and traditional West African drum and dance troupe Hamana Bjemakan.

Coventry’s award-winning WorldSong choir provides spine-tingling harmonies with traditional songs from Eastern Europe, Africa, Britain, America and beyond. The powerful, energetic, and very entertaining Suruj Bhangra Group will be there. And Leamington’s own Sambassadors of Groove will recreate the carnival atmosphere of Rio with a lively percussive sound to get the feet dancing and the hips swaying.

Says NCA licensee Nick Wormald: 'This will be a memorable weekend and a chance to enjoy fantastic music that you don’t get to hear every day. Our idea is to raise awareness of the county’s valuable link with Sierra Leone. Donations will be welcome to help One World Link run a valuable youth exchange programme with young people in Sierra Leone.'

Sunday’s festival also includes an African barbecue, Asian cuisine, face painting, hair braiding, storytelling and puppet shows. Summer sounds of Steel Pans ring out in Leamington
  • Steel Pan Academy performs at The Newbold Comyn Arms on Sunday
  • Young 'panners' getting ready for trip to Paris

Forget the winter chill – listen out for the joyful sunshine sound of steel pans this Sunday afternoon (22nd Feb) when young stars of The Steel Pan Academy perform at Leamington Spa’s Community Pub of the Year, The Newbold Comyn Arms.

The Academy plans to take three of its youth groups on tour to Paris in July. This weekend’s concert will help raise funds to enable 46 Coventry and Warwickshire youngsters to take part in a concert tour which will include a show at Disneyland Paris.

Says Academy Director, Diana Hancox, ‘This is an educational tour that benefits our young performers and their audiences. We are all working very hard to raise funds in many different ways – from cake sales to car washing.

'But the best way is to show our "pannists" in action and we hope that lots of people head for The Newbold Comyn Arms to support us. Donations in Pounds and Euros will be very welcome!’

The Steel Pan Academy is a non-profit organisation that promotes the teaching and playing of steel pans both in schools and out of school groups. In 2007, they organised a successful youth group tour of Barcelona.

More recently, they have performed at the Royal Show and Kenilworth Agricultural Show and have entertained shoppers in Leamington’s Royal Priors Centre and Sainsburys and at Tescos at the Ricoh Arena on Coventry.

With their team of experienced steel pan teachers, and players, the Academy not only runs many after-school groups, they also provide training for adults and support University of the Third Age.

Sunday’s spectacular show starts at 2pm. Just head for Leamington’s Newbold Comyn Park and follow the sound of the Caribbean.

Leamington teenage cancer patient swims with dolphins

  • Ruby Johnson is back home after 'holiday of a lifetime'

13-year-old Ruby Johnson, who is undergoing treatment for a rare form of teenage childhood cancer, has fulfilled her ambition to swim with dolphins.

Ruby, her parents Richard and Sarah and her cousin Rosie have returned from a dream holiday at the 'Give Kids The World' resort in Florida, USA, a non-profit resort designed to create magical memories for children with life-threatening illnesses.

Their two-week vacation included visits to Universal Studios, Walt Disney World and a chance to swim with the dolphins of Discovery Cove.

The holiday was made possible by a major fundraising campaign which included the 'Ramble for Ruby' sponsored walk and a number of music events organised by The Newbold Comyn Arms, Leamington Spa's Community Pub of the Year.

Licensee Nick Wormald had met Ruby and her family by chance and learned about her brave three-year battle with neuroblastama involving prolonged and often painful treatment. He helped Richard and Sarah organise the sponsored 'Ramble For Ruby' in October, attracting 300 walkers and staged a day-long music marathon featuring first-rate artists from Leamington's lively music scene.

The Newbold Comyn Arms laid on a 'welcome home' party for Ruby on Friday (5th December) with music by White Lie, an impressive punk and alternative rock band featuring three of her teenage schoolmates.

Says Richard: 'This was without doubt the holiday of a lifetime. We were given first-class treatment everywhere we went. It would never have happened without the kind and generous support and donations from many people and we would like to thank everyone who helped to give Ruby this wonderful experience.

'Now she's home, we are looking forward to a quiet family Christmas and getting back to our normal routine. Ruby is still having regular treatment but should be back in school again soon.'

Asked what the best part of the holiday was for her, Ruby replied without hesitation, 'Swimming with dolphins. And shopping!'

Ruby returned from Florida, proudly wearing a new necklace with a single pearl.

Says Ruby: 'I got the necklace when we went to Universal Studios. I had to choose an oyster and welcome it into the world by saying "Aloha!" Then we opened and cleaned the oyster, took out the pearl and placed it in a diamond clasp on a necklace.

'Now I can wear it all the time to remind me of my holiday.'

Three leading Leamington bands for Ruby's Welcome Home Party

  • Top music at The Newbold Comyn Arms to welcome back brave Leamington teenager from dream holiday

A musical welcome home awaits Ruby Johnson, the Leamington teenager who has been battling a rare form of childhood cancer and has returned from a dream holiday in Florida.

White Lie are Ruby's school mates Jake Burns on guitar and vocals, Jake Greenway on drums and Jack Telford. After their superb debut at The NCA, they return with their powerful mix of early punk and alternative rock, influenced by The Ramones, The Who, Green Day and Kings of Leon.

Mike on guitar, Roger on vocals and Phil on keyboards make up the line-up of Lost Dog. Their polished arrangements of songs from the 50s and 60s have delighted audiences for around twenty years and their excellent arrangement of the song Ruby went down a storm after Ruby Johnson's first appearance on BBC TV's Midlands Today.

Winding up the party with high energy rock 'n roll and ragtime boogie-woogie, The Bo Dudleys play loud and raucous arrangements of songs by the likes of Jerry Lee Lewis and Chuck Berry.

Says licensee of The NCA, Nick Wormald, 'The campaign for Ruby has raised a staggering £22,400 and this is partly thanks to Leamington's thriving music scene. Newbold Comyn Arms raises £3000 for Cancer Research UK

  • Cheque presented to cancer scientist after Himalayan trek
  • Top local musicians performed to raise cash

Leamington Spa's leading live-music pub has raised over £3000 for breast cancer research.

A cheque for £3085.18 was presented to research scientist Dr. Ronni Nanton and Cancer Research UK's Relay for Life chair, Jeff Redding by licensee of The Newbold Comyn Arms, Nick Wormald.

Dr Nanton was one of six intrepid women who took part in a Himalayan trek in September to raise money for the charity. The party also included singer Maddy Prior of the celebrated folk band Steeleye Span.

CAMRA's Community Pub of the Year, The Newbold Comyn Arms raised the money by staging two music festivals earlier this year, featuring a wide selection of artists from the thriving music scene of Leamington and Warwickshire.

Says Nick Wormald: 'We were delighted to showcase the superb musical talents that can be found in this area. The "musicfests" featured thirty-six artists, all of whom appeared for free. The trek itself was privately arranged and the ladies funded all travel expenses themselves. All the money raised by our customers went straight to Cancer Research UK.'

The pub also teamed up with a local brewery to launch a new beer in support of the campaign for breast cancer research. Sold exclusively at The NCA as 'Girls' Breast Bitter', the beer was brewed by the wives of The Slaughterhouse Brewery, Warwick's only independent brewery.

Says Ronni Nanton, 'We've received wonderful support from The Newbold Comyn Arms and from everyone who was involved in the fundraising efforts. The music events have been great fun and they've also brought a lot of attention to the importance of cancer research.'

The Newbold Comyn Arms has become one of the most successful live music venues in the area with regular top name guest artists plus a popular open mic session every Wednesday night from 8:30pm.

Leamington teenager's holiday wish to come true.

  • Leamington teenager on cancer treatment to receive full insurance cover for Florida visit
  • Birmingham charity to cover the premium for 13-year-old Ruby Johnson

Leamington teenager Ruby Johnson has at last secured insurance cover for a Florida holiday even though she has been receiving intensive cancer treatment for over three years.

Kent-based insurance company Citybond Suretravel has provided cover for the 13-year-old so that she can enjoy a holiday with her family in the non-profit 'Give Kids The World' resort, designed to create magical memories for children with life-limiting illnesses.

Plans for the holiday have been underway since September but the main stumbling block has been to find an insurance company willing to provide cover for Ruby, who has been battling with neuroblastoma, a rare form of childhood cancer.

Says Ruby's father, Richard, 'After widespread media coverage, we have had terrific support from hundreds of people who learned about Ruby’s situation.

'We never lost hope that we'd be able to find insurance cover, despite the real risk of her needing expensive medical treatment while on holiday. Now we're absolutely delighted that Citybond Suretravel has come forward with suitable cover.'

Even more welcome is the news that a Birmingham charity, Gentlemen's Night Out has offered to meet the cost of the insurance premium.

Established over 40 years ago, the charity raises funds through an annual Christmas Dinner, London Marathon teams and other appeals and donations.

Working in conjunction with the children's charity 'When You Wish Upon A Star', Gentlemen's Night Out has granted wishes for hundreds of very poorly children and young adults.

Now all that's left for Ruby, her parents Richard and Sarah and her 17-year-old cousin Rosie is to pack their bags and enjoy this special family holiday of a lifetime.

The Newbold Comyn Arms, Leamington Spa's Community Pub of the Year has organised many of the fund-raising events for Ruby and plans to stage a 'Ruby Goes West' party this Friday to wish her bon voyage.

On hearing the news, licensee Nick Wormald said 'this is absolutely wonderful and I applaud Richard and Sarah's tenacity in pursuing every possible lead to secure insurance. This typifies the strength they have shown in supporting Ruby over the past three years and it's a magnificent gesture by Gentlemen's Night Out to fund the cost. I hope everyone that has supported our fund raising activities can join us for a stunning send-off party on Friday.'

Entertainment includes music from White Lie, a band that features some of Ruby's classmates. Admission is free and the music starts at 8.30pm.

300 take part in fund-raising 'Ramble For Ruby'

  • Over £14,000 raised for Leamington teenager on cancer treatment
  • Funds to support Florida holiday and further treatment for Ruby

£14,097 has so far been raised in an unprecedented local campaign to support a young Leamington teenager who has been battling with cancer for over three years.

The campaign went into a higher gear this weekend when an estimated 300 people took part in a sponsored four mile walk to support 13-year-old Ruby Johnson who is receiving treatment for neuroblastoma, a rare form of childhood cancer.

'Ramble For Ruby' took place on the morning of Saturday 18th October when family, friends, volunteers and well-wishers gathered in beautiful autumn sunshine at The Newbold Comyn Arms, Leamington Spa's Community Pub of the Year, before setting off on a return trip to The Stag at Offchurch.

The only child of Richard and Sarah Johnson of Emerald Way, Leamington Spa, Ruby enjoyed a healthy childhood until she woke up one morning with a pain in her back that was diagnosed as a tumour. Since that day, she has coped with long spells in hospital and the side effects of chemotherapy, surgery, stem cell transplant and radiotherapy. Her illness has robbed her of a normal life such as school, fun and friends.

Money raised from the walk itself and from donations and collections at The Newbold Comyn Arms will fund a holiday for Ruby at the 'Give Kids The World' resort in Florida, USA. The non-profit resort is designed to create magical memories for children with life-limiting illnesses and their families.

Says licensee of The NCA, Nick Wormald, 'The campaign to support Ruby has exceeded my wildest expectations. The quite astonishing sum of money raised means it is now possible for Ruby's parents to consider alternative specialist treatment for Ruby.'

'Of course, we will continue to raise funds to help Ruby. One idea we have is to organise a series of mini "Rambles for Ruby" where people can organise their own walks and enjoy the beautiful Warwickshire countryside. Anyone interested can get in touch and I'll be happy to help out.'

Ruby's father, Richard says, 'We had a fantastic turn-out for the walk on Saturday and we're immensely grateful for the support that so many people have offered for our beautiful daughter. Although she couldn't take part in the walk itself, she had a wonderful day and her own cheerfulness and bravery were an inspiration for everybody.'

In addition to 'Ramble for Ruby', The Newbold Comyn Arms staged a number of fund-raising events for Ruby including a live karaoke night with Leamington based covers band The Curious Things, an Elvis Tribute Night and an all day festival of music featuring sixteen local artists and bands.

Anyone wishing to support any of the activities at The NCA or help raise funds for Ruby should contact Nick at the pub by e-mailing nick@newboldcomynarms.co.uk or calling 01926 338810.

Important update

Ruby's illness has meant that it has been impossible to obtain medical insurance for her holiday and one of the aims of the weekend's fund raising was to find a benefactor who might underwrite any unforeseen medical expenses.

Following Ruby's appearance on Sunday's edition of BBC Midlands Today, two potential parties have come forward and these leads are being investigated as this story goes go to press.

Further update - Tuesday October 21st, 6pm

Ruby's family has just learned that an anonymous benefactor has offered to cover up to £10,000 of any unforeseen medical expenses that she may incur during next month's visit to "Give Kids The World".

The one obstacle faced by her family has been obtaining travel insurance for Ruby. Ruby's cancer is still active and no insurance company has so far been willing to provide a policy for her.

Says Ruby's father, Richard Johnson, 'This offer is wonderful news and gives further proof to the warmth and generous support that we've received from so many people since they've learned about Ruby's illness.

'Of course, if Ruby does need treatment while we're away, medical expenses could be astronomical. It's a great relief to know that at least part of her medical bills can be met through this fantastic offer and we're very grateful.'

The family remains hopeful that other generous sponsors may come forward before the holiday for Ruby in a month's time.

Over 200 walkers in fund-raising 'Ramble For Ruby'
  • Walk named after Leamington teenager on cancer treatment
  • Funds to support Florida holiday for Ruby
  • Ramble takes place between The Newbold Comyn Arms, Leamington and The Stag, Offchurch

More than 200 people have pledged to join a walk so that a young Leamington teenager can go on holiday in Florida after three years of intensive cancer treatment.

'Ramble For Ruby' takes place on Saturday 18th October and honours the bravery of Leamington teenager Ruby Johnson who has been battling with neuroblastoma, a rare form of childhood cancer.

13-year-old Ruby, only child of Richard and Sarah, enjoyed a healthy childhood until she woke up one morning with a pain in her back that was diagnosed as a tumour. Since that day, her life has been turned upside down. She has coped with long spells in hospital and the side effects of chemotherapy, surgery, stem cell transplant and radiotherapy. Her illness has robbed her of a normal life such as school, fun and friends.

Thanks to the Swansea-based charity, the Christian Lewis Trust, Ruby has been offered a holiday at the ‘Give Kids The World’ resort in Florida. The non-profit resort is designed to create magical memories for children with life-limiting illnesses and their families.

'Ramble for Ruby' starts at 11am at The Newbold Comyn Arms in Leamington’s Newbold Comyn Park and heads to The Stag in Offchurch before returning to The NCA. Ruby’s parents are raising funds needed for Ruby’s holiday from pledges by people taking part in the walk.

Her father, Richard says, ‘Ruby has suffered so much but every day her unfailing sense of humour has everyone round her smiling and laughing. She is beautiful, clever and brave and we are immensely proud of her’.

In addition to 'Ramble for Ruby', The Newbold Comyn Arms, Leamington Spa’s Community Pub of the Year, has offered to help with a number of fund raising events. These include live karaoke with Leamington Spa band The Curious Things, an Elvis Tribute Night, a sponsored golf day and a football tournament.

Says licensee of The NCA, Nick Wormald, ‘It's fantastic to see so many people already wanting to get involved in helping Ruby. One idea we have is to organise a series of mini “Rambles for Ruby” where people can organise their own walks and enjoy the beautiful Warwickshire countryside. Anyone who wants to set up another ramble can get in touch and I’ll be happy to help out.’

Nick is also planning to hold an all-day music festival at The NCA on Sunday 19th October, the day after the walk, to raise further funds for the charity.

Anyone wishing to support any of the activities at The NCA should contact Nick at the pub by e-mailing nick@newboldcomynarms.co.uk or calling 01926 338810.

Important Update - Thursday 9th October

Yesterday, Ruby went to Leicester Royal Infirmary for the results of her recent scans. Ruby's illness has shown increased activity and she has been told by her oncologist that the illness will take her life.

Because of this news, some of the costs associated with Ruby's holiday have increased. Organiser of many of the fundraising events for Ruby, Leamington licensee Nick Wormald has appealed for more support to ensure that she can go on holiday.

Says Nick, 'Please help Ruby and her family by supporting the many events we have arranged or contacting us if you would like to help in any other way.'

Nick can be contacted by email on nick@newboldcomynarms.co.uk or call 01926 338810.

The following background details have been provided by Richard Johnson:

  • Ruby is 13 years old and has been suffering from Neuroblastoma (a rare form of childhood cancer) since she was 10.
  • In January 2006 she had six months of intense chemotherapy.
  • In July 2006, she had surgery to remove a tumour (13cm x 9cm) from her back.
  • She had more chemo at the end of 2006, followed by a stem cell transplant.
  • She had radiotherapy treatment in February 2007.
  • In April 2007 she had immunotherapy and more chemo on October 2007 until recently.
Ruby's interests are: fashion, make-up, art, cooking, shopping, electronic games and other usual 13-year-old stuff. Her heroes include television personalities Gok Wan and Fern Brittain.

Ruby, our only child, was a perfecly healthy 10-year-old until a pain in her back was diagnosed as a tumour. That very same day we were transferred to Leicester Royal Infirmary, some 40 miles from her home in Leamington Spa. From then on, her life has been turned upside-down.

Not only has the illness affected her for month after month, she has missed out on a normal life of school, fun and friends with very long stays in hospital. She has endured a huge amount of pain and suffering due to intense treatment and massive amount of surgery. The chemotherapy made her lose her long blond beautiful hair; she had massive weight loss mainly because of morphine and chemotherapy mixture, nasal gastric tubes, blood and platelet transfusions, Hickman Line, a port-o-cath fitted, regular bone marrow aspirates (needles in spine and bone marrow extracted), scans, regular injections in her leg, weekly blood tests, drugs that caused sickness and drugs to stop her feeling sick - that all came with their own side-effects! These have all made her life extremely awkward, painful and uncomfortable.

She has made and lost many friends in hospital due to the nature of this awful disease. She has attended funerals of her friends - this is not something that your average 10-year-old has to deal with but she managed to make us all proud of her calm and dignified manner.

Ruby has suffered so much but every day her unfailing sense of humour has everyone round her smiling and laughing. She is beautiful, clever and brave and we are immensely proud of her. Despite all of tis intensive treatment, Ruby still has this dreadful, life-limiting disease.

Ace fiddle-player Joe O’Donnell brings Celtic rock to Leamington

The superb electric fiddle-player Joe O’Donnell returns to Leamington with his powerful Celtic fusion band Shkayla. Catch them on Saturday October 4th at the town’s popular music pub, The Newbold Comyn Arms.

The Limerick-born musician has rocked the Irish and UK music scene since the 70s through his work alongside Rory Gallagher, Gary Moore and Thin Lizzy's Phil Lynott and as a member of rock legends East Of Eden.

Joe moved to Coventry in 1998 and has been active in the city’s folk scene often promoting live music sessions while working with leading Midlands musicians to establish Shkayla.

Named after the Gaelic word for ‘stories’, the band recently released its long-awaited and critically acclaimed album, Celtic Cargo. Recorded in Coventry and Stratford-upon-Avon, it features eleven tracks of tunes and songs from Ireland, Scotland and Brittany, performed with powerful rock and funk rhythms and arrangements.

The line-up includes some of the most respected musicians on the Midlands music circuit. Keyboards-player Martin Barter and drummer Brendan J.Rayner are members of leading jazz band The Big Easy. Coventry guitarist Si Hayden has a huge reputation in his own right for his impressive fingerpick and flamenco-style playing, and bass-player Mark Fulton has toured and recorded extensively with top name rock and jazz line-ups.

Joe O’Donnell says: ‘These guys are fantastic musicians to work with. They come from different musical backgrounds but there’s a great bond between us on stage and they really do bring out the power of Celtic music.’

The band performs in The Stables Bar of the NCA in Newbold Comyn Park. Admission is free and the music starts ay 9pm.

Joe O’Donnell’s Shkayla returns to the venue on December 20th for a Celtic Christmas Party.

The Newbold Comyn Arms selected by CAMRA members as one of Britain’s top pubs.

There’s cause for celebration at The Newbold Comyn Arms in Leamington this month. The pub has been included for the first time in The Good Beer Guide, produced by CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale.

Published this month, the Guide features the popular music and real ale pub as one of Britain’s top 4,500 outlets for cask beer.

Located in Leamington's Newbold Comyn Park, this is the latest in a year of achievements for The NCA which was named by CAMRA as Warwickshire’s Community Pub Of The Year last February.

Licensee, Nick Wormald, who took over the pub three years ago, was delighted with the news. He says, ‘We had a celebration with our regulars and we have now launched a new permanent and exclusive beer to mark the occasion.’

The beer with the surprising name of ‘Girls Breast Bitter’ was designed, brewed and produced by the wives of Slaughterhouse Brewery, Warwick’s only independent brewer, and 10p of every pint sold is donated to Cancer Research UK.

Now in its 36th year, The Good Beer Guide is Britain’s independent guide to good beer and good pubs. It is completely revised and updated each year by CAMRA members up and down the country who decide on the best pubs in their areas.

Leamington musicians line up to support a children’s charity

A showcase of Leamington’s finest musical talent is to appear at the town’s leading music pub, The Newbold Comyn Arms for a day-long festival of music.

The all-star non-stop ‘Musicfest’ takes place from 2pm to 11pm on Sunday 21 September, 2008 as part of a weekend dedicated to raise money for the Acorns Children’s Hospice Trust.

The line-up of 18 acts appearing in The Stables Bar, in Leamington's Newbold Comyn Park, covers all styles from rock to roots, blues to Latin jazz and even accordion singalong. Each artist will play a 25-minute slot which was allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Artists include popular local line-ups The Sands, The Loaded, Crackerman, Shadowfax and Pearl River featuring the songs and vocals of acclaimed singer Shanade Morrow, plus talented multi-instrumentalist Ben Clempson with double bass player John Parker.

The Acorns Trust offers a network of care for ‘life limited children’ – children who are unlikely to reach adulthood because of illness. With hospices in Birmingham, Walsall and Worcester, the charity has already helped over 1100 families.

Says Acorns trustee, David Butcher, ‘We were bowled over by The NCA’s fantastic offer to stage this event. Each of our hospices has ten beds and each of these costs £450 per night to provide the respite care and support that the children and their families need. So an event like this will have a real impact.’

The NCA has already staged three Musicfest events this year and this is proving a very popular format for a full day’s entertainment to support a great cause. Says licensee, Nick Wormald ‘The Acorns Trust had already booked an ticketed event with us for the Saturday night but interest has been so strong that we decided to stage something on the Sunday for everyone to get involved.

‘It’s heart-warming to see so much support from the Leamington music scene. This is going to be a great day of high-quality music and an opportunity to help a very worthwhile cause.'

CAMRA’s Community Pub of the Year, The Newbold Comyn Arms has become one of the most successful live music venues in the area with regular top name guest artists and a popular open mic session every Wednesday night from 8:30pm.

Taste the brew of the ‘Slaughterhouse Wives’ at The Newbold Comyn Arms

A new beer with a woman’s touch is to be launched in Leamington on Thursday 14th August.

The event takes place in the town’s famous music pub and CAMRA Community Pub of the Year 2008, The Newbold Comyn Arms.

Brewed by the wives of The Slaughterhouse Brewery, Warwick’s only independent brewery, the concoction will provide a tasty reminder of the pub’s ongoing campaign for breast cancer research and will be launched under the name of ‘Girls Breast Bitter’.

June Ridgway and Kate Knell worked together on the full process of designing the beer, brewing it, bottling it, designing the labels and even sticking the labels on the bottles.

Says June, ‘From the start this was a joint idea. We wanted to make it a refreshing summer drink that would appeal to female taste buds.’

Says Kate, ‘This ties in nicely with the campaign to beat breast cancer – something we both support strongly. We both took part in the Race For Life last month at Warwick Racecourse.’

The beer will be launched at 7pm in The Stables Bar of The Newbold Comyn Arms, Newbold Comyn Park, Leamington. The Slaughterhouse Brewery will donate 10p per pint to Cancer Research UK and the licensee, Nick Wormald has pledged to donate another 20p per pint sold.

The launch night will include a feast of live entertainment with dancing from Sambassadors of Groove, Leamington’s renowned community samba band, and live music in The Stables Bar from some of the region’s most talented female artists including Linda Watkins (who releases her new CD, Emily’s Rainbow, in October), Shanade and Anatasha.

Authentic Indian curry will be available throughout the evening from Senior Kang’s Taste of Punjab restaurant. Manjit Kang's family hails from a Punjabi farming community and 'Mandy' has, as her passion, a love of superb Asian cuisine.

There will be collections during the evening to add to the growing pot of over £2000 that the pub has raised so far to support a party of six women who are heading for the Himalayas on September 6 for the charity.

The intrepid trekkers include Steeleye Span singer, Maddy Prior and NCA regular and Cancer Research UK funded scientist Dr. Ronni Nanton.

Says Ronni, ‘We’re very grateful for the wonderful support we’ve received from The Newbold Comyn Arms. They have already staged some fantastic music events which have not only helped to raise cash but also brought a lot of attention to the importance of breast cancer research.’

Further details are available from The NCA on 01926 338810.

Folk-dance the night away to the music of Steamchicken

Kenilworth’s famous family band Steamchicken is to host a summer’s evening of up-tempo folk music and dancing in Newbold Comyn Park, Leamington.

The event takes place in the town’s popular music pub, The Newbold Comyn Arms on Thursday 24th July. This is a warm-up for the weekend’s Warwick Folk Festival and, weather permitting, dancers will be swinging their partners outdoors on the terrace.

Steamchicken describe themselves as a bustling bluesy band playing tunes from Jelly Roll Morton to traditional folk to Lonnie Donegan and all points in between.

The seven band members include two fathers and sons. The line-up plays harmonica, mandolin, keyboards, squeezebox, percussion, sax and trombone – a lively sound that has made them popular at folk dances and ceilidhs at music festivals across the UK.

Shropshire caller Cate Bannister will be guiding dancers through the steps and Irish dancing is also featured by six-piece female group Sciorr.

The music moves indoors at 9pm when the much talked-about young band The QP strikes up their lively folk-rock and klezmer sound. With the two younger members of Steamchicken in the line-up, The QP enjoyed phenomenal success at the Coventry Godiva Festival earlier this month and are among the attractions for the Warwick Folk Festival on the weekend of 25-27 July.

Admission is free with collections and a raffle to support the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance fund.

Newbold Comyn Arms licensee, Nick Wormald is a big supporter of the local music scene. He says, ‘The standard of musicianship in this area is very high and The NCA is proving an ideal venue for showcasing local music.

‘Steamchicken have built up a national reputation as a leading ceilidh band and The QP are destined to be a huge act as new generation folk performers. This is going to be a wonderful night of summer music.’

Further details are available from The NCA on 01926 338810.

Summer ‘Musicfest’ at Newbold Comyn Arms to support Maddy Prior charity trek

Celebrated folk diva Maddy Prior is one of six intrepid women who will be supported in a Himalayan charity trek by Leamington’s leading music pub, The Newbold Comyn Arms.

The NCA presents an all-star ‘Musicfest’ on Sunday 13 July, 2008 to raise money for Cancer Research UK. The event will promote the trek by Steeleye Span singer, Maddy and her colleagues who are travelling to Mustang in Nepal later this year. Also among the party is NCA regular and Cancer Research UK funded scientist Dr. Ronni Nanton.

From 2pm and into the evening, the pub will present a packed programme of 18 bands and solo artists in The Stables Bar.

This is the third Musicfest event this year. The previous event in April raised the fantastic sum of £1,175.27 and now the licensee, Nick Wormald has his sights firmly set on beating that record.

Says Nick: 'This will be another wonderful day and a chance to showcase the superb musical talents that thrive in this area. We’re delighted to support “The Mustang Six”. It’s a privately arranged trek and the ladies are funding all travel expenses themselves. Any money we raise on the day will go straight to Cancer Research UK.'

Local bands and musicians will each play a 25-minute slot which has been allocated on a first come, first served basis.

CAMRA’s Community Pub of the Year, The NCA has become one of the most successful live music venues in the area with regular top name guest artists and a popular open mic session every Wednesday night from 8:30pm.
